House bowling balls are available at all bowling centers for those that don’t own their own bowling balls. Even though most people that don’t own a bowling ball are just having fun you can have more fun with a bowling ball that fits better and is the right weight.
Choosing a house ball that is the right weight
Throwing the ball as fast as possible may look impressive but it is probably a losing strategy if scoring your best is something that interests you. The weight that you choose should be the max you can handle comfortably but that you can still control when swinging the ball. One way to choose a good weight for you is to be able to hold the ball straight out in front of your body with both hands for 2 to 3 seconds. The max weight for bowling balls is 16 pounds.
Find a house ball that fits your hand
Choose a grip where the fingers and thumb feel snug but still freely come out of the ball when you relax your grip. A few bowling centers will have more than just conventional grip balls and you may be able to find a fingertip grip ball to experiment with trying to throw a hooking shot. Fingertip grip balls are easier to hook and usually a ball with a grip like this is higher performance reactive or urethane ball and hooks more than the typical house ball that is made of plastic.
